Chaos' Review:
The Pledge by Kimberly Derting caught my attention right away because, it was just so unique and different. Just by reading the description "the language you speak determines what class you are". It brings a sense of awe because there has yet to be a book that could hold a similar idea as this (in my case). Charlie (Charalaina...such a pretty name!) is the protagonist that tries to lead a normal life, she's cast into the shadow by her gorgeous friend that catches the eyes of all guys around her, Brooklyn, yet little does Charlie know of her TRUE historical background. Charlie is a normal girl, works at her parents restaurant, goes to school, she typically holds a pure heart. I like when the main character can be so big-hearted, and places family before -love interest- *cough* unlike Bella Swan *cough*. Just like in the Hunger Games, how Katniss would do anything for her sister, Charlie also plays that protective "I will give up my life for you" kind of girl for her little sister. I find it sweet and empowering, because then it gives the character a goal, which is to protect her sister, and from there the story grows and holds more meaning, and it glides more smoothly. Therefore, making the book hard to put down.
There is always a love interest in books, but Kimberly Derting made it so there would be a "forbidden love" type of story unfolded, since Charlie's love interest, Max, speaks a language above her own, meaning that he is of higher class. As always, most of us readers are suckers when it comes to the whole "Romeo & Juliet" scenario about forbidden love, and it played out perfectly in The Pledge. The antagonist in this book is the Queen, who....lucky Charlie (insert sarcasm) turns out to be Max's lovely old (psycho, power hungry) Grandmother. She's just a bucket full of poison. Well, I don't intend on revealing too much, so it's time for you to head on to your nearest book store and pick up a copy, because I literally couldn't put down my book, I just kept flipping page after page, yet once I reached the end, I felt a sudden dread........Like this feeling that Charlie's Cinderella story is yet to be over, and more is come hurtling towards her, and her love, Max..........which means SEQUEL. Which is called The Essence and releases January 1st, 2013.
